Most people arrive in Sonamarg with a short list. Thajiwas glacier. Zero point. May be a pony ride. Tick the boxes and drive back to Srinagar.
What they miss is everything in between: the unhurried local experiences, the lesser-known valleys, the riverside mornings, the kind of moments that don’t make it onto travel blogs but stay with you for years after the trip.
Sonamarg is not a destination you can explore in a day. It rewards the traveller who slows down, looks beyond the obvious and lets the valley in.

Trek to Thajiwas Glacier: This is Sonamarg’s most iconic experience and the one that earns its reputation completely. The glacier is located just 3 to 4 kilometres from Sonamarg town through a wide alpine meadow alongside the Sindh River.
You can walk on the ice, capture the stunning shots of surrounding peaks and enjoy the beauty of glacier base long enough to feel genuinely present. Visit before 10AM for best views and fewest crowds. Read our detailed Thajiwas Glacier guide before you visit.
Visit Zero Point: Zero Point is situated about 25 kilometres from Sonamarg along NH1 near the base of Zoji La Pass. Snow stays here almost year-round and the views of the surrounding Himalayan mountains from this altitude are extraordinary.
Hire a cab from Sonamarg market for a half day trip and pair it with glacier visits for a full and deeply satisfying day tours.
Pony Ride Through the Meadow: Do not underestimate this one. A pony ride from Sonamarg market through the alpine meadow to the glacier base is one of those experiences that sounds great until you are actually on it, moving slowly through a wildflower meadow with glaciers ahead and mountains on every side.
River walks along the Sindh: The Sindh River runs right through the valley and walking alongside with it, particularly in the early morning before day visitors arrive is one of the most peaceful things you can do in Sonamarg.
No ticket, no guide required. Just walk, listen and let the mountains do their thing. Guests at Sindh valley resort step directly onto this walk from the property.
The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek: For trekkers, this is the headline experience. A 7-to-8-day high altitude route starting from Sonamarg passing through Nichnai, Vishansar,Krishansar,Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal lakes before ending at Naranag. Each lake looks more unreal than the last.
Mid July to mid-September is the ideal time. Go with a registered local guide and plan your pre trek night at Sindh resort and spa for the best possible start.

Authentic Sonamarg experience is found in the small decisions: where you eat, who you talk to and how slowly you move.
Have breakfast at a local dhaba: Skip the hotel buffet one morning and sit down at one of the small roadside dhabas near Sonamarg market. Order noon chai; the unique pink salty Kashmiri tea and warm Sheermal bread. It costs almost nothing and tastes like the place itself.
Talk to the horsemen: The local horsemen who run pony rides to the glacier know this valley better than anyone. They have been doing this for generations. Ask them about the glacier, the old routes, and the seasons.
Visit in the early morning: Sonamarg before 8AM is a completely different place. The light is extraordinary, the air is cold and sharp, and the main meadow is almost entirely yours. Most day visitors from Srinagar do not arrive until mid-morning. Staying at Sindh resort and Spa means you have that quiet window every single day.
Eat a proper Kashmiri meal: You can enjoy authentic Kashmiri Wazwan at Sindh resort and spa which is a multi-course feast of Rogan Josh, Yakhni, Gushtaba and seekh kebabs slow cooked with aromatic spices. The resort’s dining experience gives you this in a proper setting with mountain views on every side.
Watch the valley at sunset: Find a spot on the meadow or beside the river and simply watch what happens to the light as the sun drops behind the peaks. No activity required. Just the valley doing what it does best.

These are the places and experiences that most visitors to Sonamarg completely miss:
Day 1: The Glacier and the River
Start before 8AM with breakfast at Sindh resort. Head directly to the Thajiwas glacier trailhead and walk the meadow route before the crowds arrive. Spend two to three hours at the glacier: walk on the ice, photograph the peaks, sit quietly at the base.
Return to Sonamarg for lunch try a proper Kashmiri meal at the resort or a local restaurant. In the afternoon, walk the Sindh River trail towards Gagangir; slowly. Finish the day watching the valley at sunset from the meadow. Early dinner, early sleep.
Day 2: Zero point and hidden Sonamarg
Leave by 7.30AM for Zero Point. The drive along NH1 takes about 45 minutes and the views open up dramatically as you climb. Spend an hour at Zero point taking in the snow and the surrounding peaks. Return to Sonamarg by mid-day.
After lunch, explore the local market: find a bakery, drink noon chai, talk to the horsemen. In the late afternoon, take a slow walk through Baltal valley or along the Gagangir riverside.
End the trip with a spa and wellness session at Sindh Resort and Spa.

Everything described in this guide is best experienced from a base that offers you raw landscape beauty.
